Outdoor Kitchen Landscape Design - Culinary Entertainment Under The Stars

With an outdoor kitchen landscape design, backyard entertaining is fun and enjoyable for everyone - including the cook! Beyond the traditional barbecue grill, modern outdoor kitchen designs simply extend your living space to offer everything you need for entertaining without ever having to leave the backyard. Your outdoor kitchen can be custom gourmet or simple and rustic - the only limitations are your creativity, your budget, and the available space.

Choosing the Right Materials

Unlike the kitchen inside of your home, an outdoor kitchen is always exposed to the elements. Durable, weather-resistant materials are essential for every component in your kitchen landscape design. Polymer is commonly used because of its great durability and affordable price. Brick is also popular and enhances the sophistication of modern homes. Treated wood is another option for storage space, islands, and other functions.

Outdoor countertops require weather-resistant materials as well. Choose natural stone finishes that complement the countertops in the interior kitchen - marble, granite, and slate are all popular selections. Ceramic tile also offers durability in changing conditions and is available in a variety of colors and designs.

Outdoor Kitchen Appliances

There are a few basic elements found in every outdoor kitchen landscape design. Every kitchen requires a place to cook, a countertop for preparation, and a comfortable area for dining. The right barbecue grill is a necessity, whether you choose a small grill for family use or a full-size outdoor grill with burners. Many outdoor kitchens also integrate pizza ovens and wood-burning stoves into the design.

You may also consider:

Outdoor refrigerators
Wine coolers
Storage and cabinet space
Dishwashers
Beer taps
Food warmers
Outdoor ovens
Stovetops

Barbecue Islands

Convenience is a defining element of outdoor kitchen designs. Barbecue islands provide ample space for meal preparations and storage, while offering the convenience and beauty of an indoor room. Before installing a barbecue island, decide if you prefer a custom design that becomes a permanent part of your outdoor space or a p 1000 refabricated island that can easily be installed and removed. Both types are available in a variety of materials and colors; brick is a common material for custom built barbecue islands while polymer is most often found in prefabricated versions.

*Commercial landscape lighting is most effective when it is able to successfully blend the natural outdoor lighting and the architectural lighting. Hence, it is always best to work with a professional landscape artist when coming up with your lighting design.

*Whether you intend for the fixtures to light the pathwalk or not, strategically place them such that it provides enough light for the walking area. This will enable you to enjoy the sight of the landscape during the night.

11 FAQs You Should Know About Xenon Lighting

September 17th, 2009 -- Posted in Home and Garden | 1 Comment »

This article offers information on Xenon light bulbs, which are increasing in popularity. There are eleven frequently asked questions about Xenon lighting that are answered in this article.

Over the past few years the use of xenon light sources has become increasingly popular - especially in the home. Xenon light bulbs are being used in under cabinet fixtures, cove lighting, cabinet lighting, desk lamps, backlighting, step lights, showcase lighting, book case lighting, and picture lights. Here are eleven frequently asked questions about xenon lighting - and their answers.

Q) What makes certain light fixtures xenon fixtures?

A) Xenon gas has been introduced into the glass envelopes of the light bulbs in these fixtures.

Q) Why add xenon gas to the other gases inside the glass envelope of a light bulb?

A) The primary reason is that the addition of xenon gas into the glass envelope increases the rated life of the lamp.

Q) What is the rated life of xenon light bulbs?

A) Depending on the lamp the rated life of a xenon lamp is somewhere between 8,000 and 20,000 hours.

Q) What does the term, "rated life", of a light bulb mean?

A) The "rated life" of a lamp signifies the time at which 50% of a large quantity of these lamps will have burned out. This means that 50% of these lamps will burn out before the "rated life" and 50% will burn out after the "rated life". The "rated life" does not mean that every one of the lamps will last at least that long.

Q) Is this definition of "rated life" true for all types of light bulbs or just xenon light bulbs?

A) Yes, this is the standard definition for the "rated life" for all lamps.

Q) Do xenon light bulbs operate cooler than halogen light bulbs?

A) Yes, they do. Line voltage (120 volts) xenon lamps operate especially cooler than line voltage halogen lamps, which can become extremely hot.

Q) Are xenon light bulbs dimmable?

A) Definitely, and dimming a xenon lamp will, of course, increase its average life even more than the "rated life".

Q) What kind of dimmer should be used with xenon light bulbs?

A) If the low voltage xenon lamp (12 volts or 24 volts) is powered by an electronic transformer, then the dimmer should be one that is designed to control an electronic low voltage transformer. If the low voltage xenon lamp (12 volts or 24 volts) is powered by a magnetic transformer, then the dimmer should be one that is designed to control a magnetic low voltage transformer. If, however, the xenon lamp is line voltage (120 volts), then the dimmer should simply be a line voltage dimmer.

Q) What "kind of light" is given off by xenon light bulbs?

A) Xenon lamps have a color temperature that is between ordinary incandescent and halogen. That is, the light from a xenon lamp is cooler in appearance than an incandescent lamp but warmer in appearance than a halogen lamp.

Q) Do I have to be concerned about touching a xenon light bulb with my bare hands?

A) Unlike JC halogen lamps, xenon lamps may be handled with bare hands without experiencing premature lamp failure. (Caution: always wait for the xenon lamp to cool down before touching it.)

Q) Can I replace my halogen light bulbs with comparable xenon light bulbs?

A) Yes, as long as the xenon lamp has the same wattage rating, the same voltage rating, the same type of base (bipin, wedge, festoon, etc.), and the same shape and size glass envelope as the halogen lamp.

Why Outdoor Solar Lighting Is The Best Option

August 6th, 2009 -- Posted in Home and Garden | No Comments »

Outdoor solar lighting is a great option for low voltage outdoor lighting solutions. Here’s why.

Outdoor solar lighting  can help you achieve your goals and more. When it comes to outdoor lighting, not only do you want to brighten up your house and yard at night, but you also want maintain the safety of your family, the security of your house and your electricity bill. The solar option is the best low voltage outdoor lighting option.

Of course, the primary motivation to installing outdoor lighting is to improve visibility at night. A close second is security. Therefore, the first thing you need to consider is the level of brightness you want. Some outdoor solar lighting options may not be bright enough for your liking. As you search your options be sure to keep this in mind. If you are not too concerned about security, but just want something to light up the path or provide beauty, then you need not worry about brightness when looking for outdoor solar lighting. This low voltage outdoor lighting option will be ideal for your needs.

     SOLAR NET LIGHTS
So why is outdoor solar lighting the best option? First of all, this low voltage outdoor lighting option is just that… low voltage. A huge concern with outdoor lighting is the danger of electrocution it presents. Even if the wiring is done professionally and up to code, there is still a risk of accident. Outdoor solar lighting is low voltage and doesn’t present any danger. Though you should be careful regardless of the voltage level, especially if you have a pacemaker.

Another reason why outdoor solar lighting is a good option is because it doesn’t use any electricity. Here’s how it works. Small solar panels connected to the lights charge internal batteries during the day. Then at night, either by a sensor that triggers at dark or by a switch you control, the lights come on to illuminate its area. The batteries run down at night and then are recharged the next day. The batteries of outdoor solar lighting can even recharge during overcast days. What a way to take it easy on the environment and your wallet.

If you are looking for a low voltage outdoor lighting option then outdoor solar lighting is a good option that you should consider.

Low Voltage Outdoor Lighting

August 3rd, 2009 -- Posted in Home and Garden | 1 Comment »

You might have heard of low voltage outdoor lighting, but you just aren’t sure exactly what it is or how to use it. Well, this article’s purpose is to help you become familiar with low voltage lighting and answer your most frequently asked questions on the subject.

First of all, just what is a  low voltage lighting system  anyway? Usually it consists of a transformer that is plugged into a wall outlet and steps the 110 volt current from the outlet down to a relatively safe 12 volts or so. The current is then passed through a low voltage cable to light fixtures that are placed along the way on the exterior of your home. These light fixtures can be used to eliminate your walkways, your landscaping, or any feature of the outside of your home that you want to direct attention to at night.

One of the big advantages of low voltage lighting systems is that they can be safely and easily installed by the homeowner themselves with no special tools. So if you’re looking to get involved in a home improvement project that will be relatively easy to do and really improve the outside appearance of your home especially at night, this is the job for you.

The second big advantage of low voltage outdoor lighting is that the lights are extremely energy efficient and therefore very low cost. Most of the lights that are used are in the 4 watt range, but they can go up from there. And all you have to do to get brighter light at night is just use a higher watt bulb in each light fixture.

Many installers of low voltage outdoor lighting systems wonder how many lights can be added to the system before it is overloaded. The answer to that is that each transformer is rated for a certain amount of total bulb wattage. So just add out the number of bulbs that you have in your system and multiply that by the bulb wattage that is being used and as long as that number is below the total bulb wattage rating of your transformer you should be fine.

Another interesting point to consider is that you can use different wattage bulbs in your outdoor lighting system as long as that total bulb wattage does not exceed your transformer’s capability. This will allow you to put brighter bulbs in certain areas to highlight those features even more at night.

Malibu CS330OB Low Voltage 11-Watt Metal Mission Walk Light, Oil Rubbed Bronze with Frosted Glass Globe

Malibu CS14P Low Voltage 11-Watt Metal Carriage Walk Light, Pewter with Clear Plastic Lenses

If you do happen to exceed the total bulb wattage of your transformer, you can either purchase another power pack with a higher wattage rating to handle the load, or simply purchase a second one and split the load between two transformers instead.

One warning though to be observed is to never use an extension cord between the transformer and the electrical outlet. Always plug the transformer directly into the power outlet.

As you can see,  low voltage outdoor lighting  is not all that hard to install or maintain. So why not consider installing an outdoor lighting system for your next home improvement project?

A Guide to Outdoor Lighting

July 27th, 2009 -- Posted in Home and Garden | 1 Comment »

With the evolution of lighting technology, outdoor lighting has seen its share of breakthroughs. Outdoor lighting is as important as indoor lighting. Lighting up the spaces immediately outside or surrounding our living areas is extremely vital for visual orientation, safety while navigating, and security, as well as for balancing out the indoor ambience. The outdoor milieu prepares and provides a preview to the life and living style within the four walls. Outdoor lighting is equally important in reflecting the external persona of a structure and its surrounding area. It sets a particular mood and provides a visual treat.

Outdoor lighting presents enormous scope for experimentation. It’s a virgin canvas waiting to be colored by unique lighting approaches, ideas and techniques. Outdoor lighting spaces comprise the areas surrounding the structure, pathways, swimming pools or fountains, landscape surrounding the structure, patios, balconies, decks, porches, etc.

There are a variety of options on the market, including low-voltage lighting,  flood lights , tree lights, post lights, lanterns, string bulbs for festive occasions, recessed lighting, scoops, pagoda-style louvered faced lights which granite finish that easily blend without door environs, and even  solar lights  devoid of wires and operating on NiCad batteries.

Various techniques of lighting can be used in outdoor lighting. Spot lighting, which focuses light on architectural features, may be positioned to minimize glare and focus fully on the focal point. Silhouetting is placing the light sources behind the object to bring out the shape of the object rather than the exact color and texture. Key light or shadowing requires placing the light source directly in front of the object of interest to create a light and shadow effect. Moonlighting requires a fixture to be placed on the trees and aiming it down to provide a natural peaceful moonlit effect. Deck lighting, grazing (light focuses on the object at a sharp angle) and washing the surface (light focuses on objects at a wider or blunt angle), step lighting,  walkway lighting , pond and fountain lighting, and sign lighting are some of the various techniques used for outdoor lighting.

In outdoor lighting, a basic thing that has to be kept in mind is that the lighting fixtures are exposed to all the elements outside. In case of lighting water features, the light source is sometimes from the inside to create a magical glittering and rippling effect. Therefore, appropriate lighting fixtures and lights should be chosen. Self-lighting kits of low voltage are also available for those who wish to try out their creative lighting talents.

How Solar Lights Work

July 25th, 2009 -- Posted in Home and Garden | No Comments »

The use of solar powered lighting is on the rise. Driven by high energy costs and environmental concerns, an increasing number of consumers are choosing solar as an alternative to traditional "hard-wired" landscape lighting. Ease of installation, low operating costs, and minimal maintenance are also contributing to the increased demand. But how do solar lights work?

First let’s examine the basic components of a  solar light :

Westinghouse 403206-41SP 6 Piece Inwood II Solar Lights Set, Stainless SteelCase - This is the light fixture itself. Cases come in all shapes, colors, sizes and materials.

Solar Panel - This is the business end of a solar light. Also called a solar cell or photovoltaic, the solar panel is the part that creates electricity from sunlight. It’s often integrated into the light fixture, but can be a separate unit that connects to one or more fixtures with a thin wire. It’s important to note that the solar panel makes, but does not store electricity. Without sunlight, the flow of electricity stops.

Westinghouse Solar Mosaic Garden LightsBatteries - Rechargeable batteries store the electricity produced by the solar panel. The size and number of batteries vary based on the design of the fixture. The energy stored in the batteries is actually what powers the light.

Light Source - Most solar lights use LED’s (Light Emitting Diodes) instead of conventional incandescent bulbs. LED’s are semiconductors that act like tiny light bulbs when an electrical current passes through them. They are very efficient, don’t have a filament that burns out, and produce very little heat. That doesn’t mean you will not find solar powered lights that have halogen or fluorescent bulbs, but LED’s are by far the most common light source.

Westinghouse 333502-41 2 Piece Deluxe Europa Solar Lights Set, Stainless SteelElectronics - Solar lights also have various electronic components and sensors that control functions like charging the batteries and turning the lights on automatically when it gets dark. Some even have integrated motion sensors.

Now that we know the components, let’s put it all together… Sunlight strikes the solar panel, creating electricity. An electronic component directs this electricity to the rechargeable battery for storage. When it gets dark, a sensor activates the light, allowing the stored electricity from the battery to flow through the LED. The LED glows and we have light.

Yes, the science behind all of this solar magic is a bit more complex, but now you know the basics. Essentially, a solar panel charges batteries that power the light. Now why didn’t I say that in the first place?

Consider Low Voltage Landscape Lighting

July 23rd, 2009 -- Posted in Home and Garden | No Comments »

Landscape lighting is generally more about the look that the lighting produces rather than the light function itself. Landscape lighting is about turning the beautiful exterior of your home in to an area that is worth every minute at dawn or sunrise. Solar outdoor lighting can add a tremendous amount of charm to your home if it is placed in the right areas.

One of the more popular types of outdoor lighting systems that are used today include   low-voltage systems. The majority of these systems will come with their own step down transformer. You can select from a huge variety of low voltage systems that help you achieve the same lighting results as standard outdoor landscape lighting.

Rather than using landscape lighting to transform your outdoor area, you should think of your  low voltage landscape lighting system  as an easy way to improve the overall safety of your property and family, as well as the appearance of your home after the sun begins to set.

Outdoor low voltage lighting is generally very easy to install, and the installer is not required to dig beneath their driveway in order to run wires properly. You can also go with outdoor lighting that is solar powered, which also means wireless style light systems. This means that all you must do is place your solar powered landscape lighting in an area where it will receive an adequate amount of sunlight and it will have enough juice to keep your yard lit up for hours.

There is one problem with  solar powered systems, and that is they don’t light up your landscape through out the entire night. If you want constant light to your landscape then you can opt for the traditional low voltage landscape lighting that has become more and more popular in recent years.
